Fargo is a city in southeastern North Dakota, United States, and is the county seat of Cass County. According to the 2020 census, Fargo has a population of 125,990, making it the most populous city in North Dakota and the 219th-most populous city in the United States. Fargo is a cultural, retail, health care, educational, and industrial center for southeastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota. The city is home to North Dakota State University. Fargo is also a popular tourist destination, with many attractions such as museums and historical sites. The city is located on the Red River of the North, opposite Moorhead, Minnesota. Fargo was founded in 1871 by the Northern Pacific Railway and was named after William George Fargo, a partner in Wells, Fargo & Company.
